Whitlock bested, takes second in CASCAR season finale

October 04, 2003

The strategy of the Whitlock team came up second best as Pete Vanderwyst wheeled past the #39 NMT / H & S Heat Treating Intrepid with just three laps to go in the Molson Canadian presents the CASCAR Championship Showdown. It was the second appearance of the Super Series this season at the high-bank half mile of Cayuga Speedway that also saw the crowning of Don Thomson Jr. as Champion. With a winless season and an 8th place finish today, the Home Hardware driver joins Dave Whitlock as the Series’ only three-time Champions.

Winner Pete Vanderwyst with second place Dave Whitlock (l) and third place Kerry Micks (r) in Victory Circle

Vanderwyst, making only random appearances this season, made a strong showing by earning the pole and leading the first 113 laps until being passed by Whitlock, who started 10th and had pitted earlier at lap 75. The race was stopped at lap 161 for rain showers for over an hour. At the restart, Whitlock held off a determined 20-lap charge by Kerry Micks, and opened it up to a commanding lead with ten to go. But Vanderwyst, who was sitting in 12th during the rain delay, had 75 fewer laps on his tires and powered past Whitlock on lap 197 to earn his second career Super Series victory.

"We did everything according to our plan and this NMT team had a great car for us all day" said Whitlock. "We positioned ourselves and were in the lead when the rain came, and were still strong for the run to the end. We were really looking for our 4th win of the season, but we used up a lot keeping Kerry behind us. Pete just upstaged us with his later stop, and you just can’t run with anyone that has 75 laps less on their tires. I just about put it into the wall twice trying to hold him off. It was a great season with NMT Nitrex Metal Technologies who had 35 folks here in the bitter cold today."

Mark Dilley made his sixth front row start of the season by earning outside pole. His #64 NTN Bearings Intrepid hounded Vanderwyst from the green and the two ran away from the pack nose to tail. Dilley pitted on lap 94; Vanderwyst stayed out. Restarting in 13th, his efforts to get back to the front were thwarted by a black-flag penalty due to a deemed rough driving call by officials. Dilley then miscued by making his pit entrance prior to taking the green flag and was forced to again stop and go during green. The last half of the race was an unsuccessful attempt to regain that lost lap and he finished a disappointing 14th.

"That’s just the way this season has gone" said a dejected Dilley. "A fast car again and a bad call and a crappy finish. That’s racing – that’s it."

The #64 team continually fielded one of the fastest and best looking cars all season and was looking for a chance to move into third in points, but didn’t make it. Their season-ending 4th is still a great improvement for the team that has finished the last two seasons in 6th overall. NTN Bearings support was just awesome this year and great support has also come from associate sponsors Leland Industries and Global Fasteners who had many guests in their hospitality area again this week.

Bryan Cathcart wrapped up the Rookie of the Year honours in his #71 National Fast Freight Intrepid and was having the best run of his year when a mechanical failure took him out of contention.

"That was my season high and low all in one race" said Cathcart. "We left a bit on the table in qualifying but felt OK with my 20th starting spot. The car was great, we were up to 12th by lap 75 and I could feel that top ten or maybe even a top five but for sure it was going to be our best finish of the season. We pitted on lap 94 for tires and were in good shape to go to the emd when an axle snapped on the restart and took away our chances. I feel so bad for this new team that has thrashed so hard all year and was looking to end on a high note. But it wasn’t in the cards." They made repairs but ended up 35 laps down in 27th.

Drivers will pick up all their hardware and loot at the annual CASCAR Awards Banquet in London. More details to follow.

To all fans and sponsors of Whitlock Motorsports, and of drivers Dave Whitlock, Mark Dilley and Bryan Cathcart, we thank you for joining us this year and urge you to catch the TV coverage of Canada’s finest Series. It’s damn good racin’.

Dilley pole, Whitlock wins Peterborough

September 20, 2003 - In front of a full house on this beautiful fall Saturday evening, Mark Dilley drove his NTN Bearings Intrepid to a new track record during qualifying for the National Fast Freight delivers The Leland 200 at Peterborough Speedway. But it was teammate Dave Whitlock that crossed the finish line first to resounding cheers from fans that had witnessed excellent entertainment.

NOTE: to keep this in perspective, recognize that actual race lap times of under fifteen seconds relate to 4 laps per minute around this little one-third mile high banked oval. They spend about 4 seconds in each corner, which leaves about 3 seconds per straightaway… a lot happens quickly and the drivers well displayed their skills.

Dave Whitlock started his Unitec/ NMT Intrepid from the inside of the third row and quickly moved to fourth. The 4-car pack of Dilley, Peter Gibbons, Kerry Micks and Dave pulled away from the field and continually sparred each other for position as they worked through the balance of the field, and a few cautions. When Dilley and Gibbons pitted for tires at lap 121, Micks and Whitlock stayed out. The two challenged hard for the next 74 laps until the tangle that made the difference in turn one caused Micks to lose control enough for Whitlock and several others to get by. His #39 Intrepid opened up a five-car lead over Jim Lapcevich during the final 4 laps to claim the third victory of the season for ‘Ol Spin’.

"It was a great win for our new sponsor Unitec and for NMT tonight. The car was perfect right from the start and I just had to bide my time and let the race unfold. I hate that I had to move Kerry but we were simply faster and had to get by him. I waited for him to gather it up but I also knew he’d lost his power steering and he had a handful. If he had’ve been faster than us, he wouldn’t have been in that situation, and if the role was reversed, he would’ve done the same – that’s short track racing. Thanks to National Fast Freight and Leland for their involvement too – it was a great day."

Mark Dilley had a great start to the event sponsored in part by one of his associate sponsors Leland Industries. Leland executives entertained their guests in the tower suites and participated in both opening and closing ceremonies. Dilley’s record qualifying time of 14.252 (avg. speed of 84.115 mph) was better than his fifth-fastest practice best of 14.42. Once the green flag flew, the #64 NTN Bearings Intrepid was hounded continually by Gibbons. But Mark made it count every time past and led all of the first 121 laps. The fast pit work by the 64 team got him back out ahead of Gibbons for the restart but Gibbons was faster on the track and got through the lapped traffic first. The pair had caught the leaders when Whitlock opened the door on Micks, and both got through. Mark finished fourth and gained 20 points on DJ Kennington to put his NTN team only 28 out of third, and 45 behind second place Micks.

"What a rocket again tonight" said Dilley. "I felt that second qualifying lap was good enough, and wow a track record and five front rows this year just shows what kind of job Whitlock Motorsports and these NTN guys are doing for us. And to have the stands full and all these folks from Leland and their sister company Global Fasteners here tonight is just awesome. I wish we could have got through all that traffic sooner and been up there with Whit at the end but the car wasn’t quite as good after we pitted. But you gotta’ just love this place. That was a blast."

Bryan Cathcart came home to his most familiar track, with his sponsor hosting the event and entertaining over 200 guests in their hospitality tent that featured kids’ entertainment, clowns and the #71 and #64 show cars. Even Bryan’s National Fast Freight Racing transporter was on the track for two parade laps.

Cathcart’s qualifying best of 14.570 was faster than his best practice times and the rookie team felt pretty good about the race. But fighting some handling issues that were making the car less than perfect, and starting in 14th he knew it would be a tough battle. After an early race incident saw his #71 Intrepid have to pit to remove the damaged hood, Bryan fought his way back up to 13th but ended down two laps.

"It was a pretty good night. Things happen pretty fast out there when you’re in the middle of the pack" said Cathcart. " And after you get down a lap, you’re racing everybody around you for each position, then the leaders start coming past and it gets really busy. Our car was not as good tonight as we wanted, especially for our sponsors and fans that were there. We just did the best we could from where we were and kept it off the wall."

"I can’t say enough about the effort of Ray Ash and his staff from National Fast Freight not only for their season with us but the effort they put into this event. Thank you so much. And to have Mark on the pole and Dave win the race makes you real proud to be part of this whole deal this year. I just wish we had the car to be up there at the front too."

All the Whitlock Motorsports teams were involved in pre-race activities last week. Monday, Bryan and his #71 Intrepid joined the National Fast Freight folks for a successful press conference. Wed and Thu, Dave’s Unitec / NMT Intrepid and the Tire Change game attended the annual Unitec open house at their facility in Concord. Great people and a great turn out both days. Thursday night, Dave and the big hauler were at a private function for all the staff and friends at the NMT facility in Burlington. All had a ball and some fine food too. Friday afternoon, the big rig moved to Leland Industries in Toronto for another press conference that was well covered by CFTO TV featuring interviews with company President Byron Nelson, drivers Mark Dilley and Bryan Cathcart, and CASCAR’s Richard Coughlin.

Next weekend, the season wraps up with the big 3-day CASCAR Championship Showdown at Cayuga.

Great Canadian Race - Delaware Speedway

Dave Whitlock started from the outside front row and immediately pulled in behind Dilley. The pair of Whitlock Intrepids paced the field for the first 85 laps until Dave pitted during the 4th caution. Restarting in 17th, Whitlock’s charge back to the front was quickly clouded when he reported a vibration just prior to the lap 97 caution. The crew took a quick look at things and fearing it was too serious to quickly correct, sent him back out. Performance did not seem to be affected, so Whitlock pressed onward to 12th by lap 122 - running quicker than leader Dilley, and with Gibbons in his sights just three cars ahead. But on lap 149, Whitlock told his crew "she’s over boys – I’m parking it." Warren had the team ready to get right on it with the welder if needed too. But Dave felt the clutch pressure plate had come apart and they couldn’t prevent further damage. Another poor pay day; he ended up 23rd.

"The Dare to Dram Intrepid was excellent today" Whit said. "Our strategy to pit early on lap 85 would have set us up kinda’ the way we planned it. I would have been working on Gibbons around 150 or so and going for the lead. If it had’ve played through, Mark should’ve been battling with me at the end there."

"But great job by Mark and Giulio and their NTN team this weekend. We had a good chance for a storybook Whitlock 1-2 start/finish and that would have been pretty neat. We got two more chances this year, and both are good tracks for both of us."

NOTES: The Dare to Dream for Ovarian Cancer campaign was well received by fans. The local Canadian Cruisers motorcycle group escorted Deborah Landry to the track as an unofficial stop on her cross-country motorcycle ride. She joined Dave Whitlock on pit road for the autograph session – with her motorcycle and trailer. The pair was later interviewed trackside as part of the Opening Ceremonies prior to the Great Canadian 300. Deborah was thrilled at the reception and received many pledges on the spot. Never having seen a race like that before, she was ecstatic and collected autographs from each driver on a Delaware Speedway hat.

Deborah’s official arrival in London will be Tuesday Sep 2nd at 10 am at the London Regional Cancer Centre, and the Canadian Cruisers will again escort her. Dave Whitlock and his Dare to Dream Intrepid will be part of the welcoming functions where Dave has been asked to speak briefly about his role in this campaign.

Whitlock fourth at Mosport Speedway 200

August 23, 2003 - It was a beautiful evening in the countryside around Bowmanville that is Mosport International Raceway. And it was 200 laps of excitement that kept the packed stands of the fast half-mile Mosport oval on the edge of their seats for the hour and half duration. Although Don Thomson Jr. started from the pole and was 26 points ahead in the Championship battle, it was the #2 man Kerry Micks that started third and never relented. Micks took the lead for the first time at lap 46 and the two ran side by side for much of the balance of the race, exchanging the lead eleven times. Micks led the final ten laps and closed the gap to just 18 points, with three events remaining. DJ Kennington rounded out the podium finishers.

Dave Whitlock was third out to time trial and had fastest time until final qualifier Don Thomson Jr. just bumped Dave from the pole. Whitlock settled the #39 NMT Intrepid into second until the restart after the first caution, when Micks darted past to chase down Thomson. Dave ran a consistent pace awaiting the final adjustment opportunity, which came with the last caution at about lap 165. His pit entry was delayed by a lap car, which resulted in his restart from the seventh spot. Although faster than the leaders at the end, Whitlock used up valuable laps in passing the three cars ahead and ran out of time to catch the leaders.

“We had a great car at the beginning and just hoped it wouldn’t go away before we had a chance to make the final adjustments” Whitlock said. “This track always changes as the sun goes down and that final caution came a little later than I would have liked. The NMT guys gave me a great car at the end and we were good enough to be on the podium for sure, but were just too far back to be a threat tonight. It was a good run for our new sponsor Unitec. We’ll take the 4th and get the gun loaded for next weekend.”

Mark Dilley qualified his NTN Bearing Intrepid in 5th and had a great run going all race, sitting comfortably in the top five and saving the car for his charge at the end. He too pitted with the leaders during the final caution and came out strong. Dilley caught Micks and Thomson and the trio were set for a battle when the handling on his #64 Intrepid just went away. He ultimately fell back to a seventh place finish, but did move solidly into 5th in points.

“Yeh, this tough luck season just keeps comin’ at us” said Dilley. “We had a great car all night, right up until I needed it. Giulio and the NTN guys made the right call there on that last stop and gave me what I needed for the final run. Then we couldn’t understand what was going on. But when they checked it out after, one tire just swelled a bunch on me and took the handling away. A top ten is always better than a bad finish and to be back in the top five in points is where we need to be with these next three races coming at us
.”

Bryan Cathcart knew he would have a tough night on a track that has never been his favorite. The National Fast Freight Intrepid started in 19th and finished 15th, six laps down from the leaders.

“I was real happy with the car during practice, but the driver messed up in qualifying and put us a way back for the start” said Cathcart, the leading Series’ Rookie. “The car was best during the middle of the race but me and it just weren’t together for the balance of the night. These cars are so different from what I’m used to that it’s just taking me a long time to get the right feel, and to communicate that to Steve (crew chief Mifsud). But on the bright side, we’re heading to tracks I’m more comfortable with and I’m hoping we can get things going together for this #71 team.”

Next weekend marks one of the biggies for Super Series teams with the 300 lap Great Canadian Race Weekend at Delaware, outside London. Activities kick off Friday night with the first ever CASCAR Challenge, a 50-lap non-points shootout for $10,000 to win. Only 20 drivers will qualify through their top performance over the last year, and Whitlock and Dilley will be duking it out with the others to grab the cash. Qualifying for Sunday’s 300 happens Saturday night.

Whitlock Motorsports welcomes Unitec

August 22, 2003 - The hood of Dave Whitlock’s #39 Intrepid will introduce a new sponsor at the Mosport Speedway 200 tomorrow night.

Since 1969, Unitec has established itself as the supplier of choice when it comes to welding supplies, maintenance products and welding gas products Canada-wide.

With offices in Concord, Edmonton and Calgary and new stores in Milton, Belleville and Barrie, Unitec currently services over 2000 accounts and manages a fleet of 55,000 cylinders and 22 delivery vehicles.

Currently, Unitec has established itself as the GTA’s largest independent supplier of welding products, welding gases, and propane. Their Concord facility fills and delivers over 12 million litres of propane per year from a 24 scale filling dock that stores 240,000 liters of propane daily.

Unitec maintains a quality system registered to ISO 9002 and is adept in EDI billing systems.

"We are delighted to welcome Richard Stangl and the 55 employees of Unitec" said Dave Whitlock, 3-time CASCAR Champion and president of Whitlock Motorsports Inc.

"Their involvement with us at the Mosport and Peterborough events will certainly expose the Unitec brand to their GTA market, and to the thousands that watch the CASCAR Super Series television broadcasts in areas where their Unitec stores are located."

"We also look forward to meeting many of their staff and customers at the Unitec Open House on September 17 – 18 in their Concord facility. We’ll have our #39 NMT Intrepid there and the Tire Change game too, so it should be lots of fun for everyone."

Unitec also maintains a strong relationship with its welding product suppliers.

Whitlock Teams – Mosport Speedway 200 pre-race

August 22, 2003 - The 2003 CASCAR Super Series takes to the high banks of Mosport Speedway tomorrow night for 200 laps of excitement on the fast half-mile oval. This event marks the beginning of the third leg of the Series; eight down and four to go. But for the top teams, the heat will get turned up as they return to familiar turf at each event.

The Championship battle is an all-time great one. For each of the last several events, the lead has swapped back and forth between defending Champion Don Thomson Jr and Kerry Micks. And even the last event in Quebec had its drama as Thomson reeled in a 3rd place finish in a borrowed car, and Micks had a bad night. Thomson now leads by 26 points but goes into this event as the defending winner in a new car. To add to the drama, DJ Kennington was the loaner of Thomson’s ride last event and lurks only 19 points behind Micks.

And 45 more points back is a tie for 4th between Neil Fair and Scott Steckly.

Mark Dilley

5th last event – Couche-Tard 200 at Autodrome Old Milwaukee St-Eustache

Mark has also been lurking in the top five most of the season and is currently in 6th just 19 markers behind the pair tied for 4th. The #64 NTN Bearings has been hot on the ovals over the last few events and Mosport should fit right in their sights.

"It was two years ago at Mosport that we earned our first win since joining Whitlock Motorsports" said Dilley. "We opened up a five-second lead until a caution came out with 15 to go, but we held ‘em off and grabbed the checker. They’ve been all through the NTN Intrepid for us and Cousin Larry’s even put a fresh load of Mopar horsepower in it, so we’ll be ready to giv’er on Saturday night."

12th last event – Couche-Tard 200 at Autodrome Old Milwaukee St-Eustache

The National Fast Freight driver has a commanding lead in the Rookie standings and is currently sitting 14th in points, just 38 back of last-year’s Rookie runner-up Cole Pearn. And since this is the only appearance of the Super Series this year at Mosport oval, it will be yet another learning experience.

"I have run here a few times over the years in my late models, so it won’t be completely foreign. But we’ll have our work cut out for us I know that" said Cathcart. "It’s a fast track and the two ends are so different. But I’m really looking forward to it. The input from Mark and Dave (Whitlock) is certainly an asset and I hope this 71 team can be good enough to be there at the end. It’ll be a long night."

Dave Whitlock

16th last event - Couche-Tard 200 at Autodrome Old Milwaukee St-Eustache

After winning both Quebec events in 2002, the DNF last event was a heartbreaker.

Dave has never won at Mosport. But looking back to 2001 when Mark won his first one, it was Dave that had taken the lead by an off-sequence early pit stop and was passed by Mark on lap 176. The two ran together at the front until Dave’s engine expired 39 laps from the end of that 250-lap event.

"We got one monkey off our back with our first win at Delaware this year, and I’d really like to get this Mosport monkey too" said Whitlock. "We have Unitec joining us as a new associate sponsor this week and it would be great to take them to the winner’s circle with us. Our oval program has been strong and the rest of the season should be good for this NMT Intrepid team. We’re out of the points hunt so we’re here to win, it’s that simple."

Bryan Cathcart

Mark Dilley strong at Ste Eustache

Saturday August 09, 2003

Mark Dilley missed earning his second consecutive oval-track pole by just five one-thousands of a second on Saturday during time trials for the Couche -Tard 200 at Autodrome Old Milwaukee Ste Eustache. The Barrie ON driver of the NTN Bearings #64 Intrepid started the race outside Mark Graham in the Challenger Motor Freight #19 and ran the outside of the flat 4/10 mile speedway for several laps in a challenge for the lead. Dilley then settled in line in the second spot as the five lead cars continued in a heated battle for each position until near halfway, but eventually faded late in the race to a fifth place finish.

"We were strong again tonight" said Dilley. "These NTN guys gave me another rocket. Missing that pole by a half a tenth says that for sure. But with the rain threatening, our strategy was to push hard right up front and get the best position early. It was a hundred lap race in my mind and we were there for a podium at that time. But it didn’t rain and we had just used up the tires by the end and I couldn’t protect the inside any longer. It was still a good run; a top five is good and that will certainly help our points." Unofficially Dilley moves to sixth, just 19 points out of fifth.

Dave Whitlock had been fastest in afternoon practice but the defending race winner missed it by a bit as the evening temperatures dropped for time trials. He qualified his #39 NMT Intrepid as fifth fastest. When the race started, Dave settled in the fourth spot behind Graham, Dilley, and Thomson, and with DJ Kennington behind, the top five moved away from the field. But his night came to a quick ending on lap 111 when he clipped a spinning lapped car on the front straight and damaged the steering beyond repair.

"You just can’t have great finishes all the time and this wasn’t our night" said Whitlock. "I saw him there and tried to steer down as quick as I could without driving into the car inside me. The impact didn’t even touch the body but it sure jerked the wheel when my right front tire hit him. I couldn’t steer or stop since the brake lines were pulled off too."

"It’s too bad. We were good and the car was starting to come to me nicely. This is a track where you really have to keep the tires under you and I think we would have been in good shape for that charge near the end and be on the podium for sure. But not tonight."

Bryan Cathcart had a real decent run for his first visit to Quebec. He qualified the #71 National Fast Freight Intrepid in 13th and maintained a steady pace throughout the 200 laps, finishing one lap down in 12th.

"We had a good car here tonight and I was feeling pretty good. But I tapped the back wall early in the race and knocked out the toe-in a bit. She was a handful after that and the crew did what they could to keep me in the race. We’re happy with that finish and we look forward to the remaining races at tracks I’ve been to before."

NOTES The day’s activities were dampened early for all teams as news quickly spread about the disappearance overnight of the complete truck and trailer of Fitzpatrick Motorsports. It was recovered in a nearby truck stop but gone were the cars of Don Thomson Jr and John Fitzpatrick, as well as three motors and all of the trailer contents – except for Donnie’s new Home Hardware driving suit. Offers of everything from cars to driving gloves were made to both drivers. Remarkably Thomson qualified fourth and finished third in the spare Intrepid of DJ Kennington while John Fitzpatrick qualified eleventh and finished ninth in another Intrepid borrowed from Neil Fair. The generosity of everyone was overwhelming but the issue has heightened, but it remains that all teams must be provided with a solution to protect themselves from this continued invasion by organized crime. The track has countered with a pledge of a secure compound facility for next year’s event.

After a weekend off, event #9 of the CASCAR Super Series will be at Mosport oval on August 23rd.

Whitlock Teams – Quebec pre-race

The road course cars are now put to rest and the focus herein is the five remaining oval events. The first is the longest hike remaining, but the flat 4/10-mile track at Ste Eustache just north of Montreal provides great action. And the Quebec fans love this fun place. The Couche - Tard 200 is a one-day Saturday show this weekend that sees many teams hold up in Cornwall both Friday and Saturday nights. For those that remember the reason, we don’t park our rigs in Quebec anymore…

Dave Whitlock

9th last event - Canadian Tire 100, Vancouver Molson Indy in the Avenue ACDelco / NMT #11 Intrepid.

Dave is the defending winner of this event and is confident that his #39 will be up front again. "We always finish well at Ste Eustache. She’s a tough little track that is real hard to pass without getting your nose inside somebody but we’ve had a lot of podiums there. Last year it was rain shortened but we had the pole and won it by driving away every restart. Warren (crew chief Jones) and all our guys love it too and I think this might be our chance to win a third race this year with this NMT Intrepid."

Many thanks to Avenue Motor Works for their support for the last three races.

At Ste Eustache, Dave’s #39 Intrepid will remain the outstanding Avenue colours of green, white and purple. And the Team transporter will debut the Rest Up! Save Your Neck. image announcing the importance of headrest adjustment to passing motorists up and down the highways.

Mark Dilley

14th last event – Canadian Tire 100, Vancouver Molson Indy in the NTN Bearings #64 Intrepid

After Calgary’s pole and race dominance, this #64 NTN Bearings team is hungry to get the results they have been robbed of several times this year on the ovals. They have worked hard and Mark has done an excellent job of putting his Intrepid in the hunt. At Peterborough, he dominated the outside groove coming back to the front after being an innocent victim. And if you saw the Mopar 300 from Calgary on TV tonight, you saw the biggest disappointment, and how innocently Mark’s win and the Whitlock Motorsports 1-2 finish evaporated.

"We have been so strong," said Dilley. "Giulio (crew chief Montanari) and these NTN guys have been giving me awesome cars that just keep getting better throughout the race. If we can ever get it to the end, this NTN Intrepid will be on the podium."

About Ste E, Dilley said "JF and his team down there do a great job. It’s a fun place to race and we’ve had some great runs there in the past. Giulio knows the track now and I can guarantee you he’ll have a rocket for me. She may not be pretty when we come out of there, but they’ll know the sixty-four car was there for sure."

Bryan Cathcart

25th last event – Canadian Tire 100, Vancouver Molson Indy in the National Fast Freight #71 Intrepid

"Those street courses were fun and were a giant learning curve for us, but now we’re back to serious business" said Bryan, who has a commanding lead in the Rookie of the Year award. He has now been to most of the remaining tracks, except Ste. Eustache.

"I’ve never raced in Quebec anywhere but I hear this will be a great one. I grew up on the little ones so I’m hoping we can learn this little one real quick. Crew chief Steve Mifsud and this National Fast Freight team are really gelling and I think we’ll get some of the finishes we had hoped for this year. And just maybe it’ll start for us this weekend – wouldn’t that be awesome."

Dave Whitlock tops team finish at Vancouver

Saturday July 26, 2003 Dave Whitlock started from the 10th spot in the Canadian Tire 100 today on the 12-turn temporary street course at Vancouver’s Pacific Place and finished 9th. Pole sitter Jeff Lapcevich simply ran away and hid from the rest of the field opening up a 12-second lead over second place finisher Kerry Micks by the half way mark of the 35-lap event. Although only one caution emerged and he lost his power steering, Lapcevich still emerged the victor with a 2.3 second lead to set the standard by sweeping both CASCAR Indy events this year. His brother Jim just missed the podium by finishing 4th. Don Thomson Jr. finished 3rd but relinquished the points lead to Micks.

"We’re happy to come out of here with a top 10 finish in the Avenue ACDelco Intrepid" said Whitlock who’s primary focus this weekend was the #39 Blue Streak entry for Al Turner. "Al had a great run going starting from outside pole but his day ended too early."

Obviously disappointed, Turner said, "I’m not sure we had anything to challenge Jeff. He was really strong. So I decided to play it safe and save the tires in case a caution came out that would allow me to get a run on him. But a big backfire brought things to a quick end on lap 9, and although I was able to coast back to the pits, it turned out to be a broken distributor and our day was done. A big thanks to Whitlock Motorsports and Blue Streak for this chance to be in the two Indys this year, but good finishes just weren’t in the cards."

Mark Dilley started the NTN Bearings #64 in 14th and quickly worked his way up to 10th. Although a miscue caused him to spin forfeiting several positions initially, his quick recovery allowed him to catch the pack, pick off a few and end up in 14th where he had started. "We were just terrible tight going out" said Dilley. "We hoped that as the fuel burned off the handling would come to us. But then I looped her and we just had to play catch up."

Bryan Cathcart started in 22nd and also had misfortune. "We were having a fun day racing with the #6 car, passing each other back and forth. I just wanted to get some laps in trying to get used to these street courses" said the leading Rookie contender. "Then I ran over a piece of steel apparently and it set up a strange vibration. After another two laps, the National Fast Freight #71 Intrepid had a broken drive shaft and our day was done after just nine laps." Cathcart finished 25th.

With the western swing coming to an end, the teams get a well-deserved break. Next event takes place August 9 at Autodrome Old Milwaukee / St-Eustache, in Montreal, QC where Dave Whitlock is the defending winner.

The initial broadcast of the recent CASCAR race at the Toronto Indy airs Monday, July 28 at 7:00 p.m. on Rogers SPORTSNET... Saturday's announced crowd for the Canadian Tire 100 was 51,171, for a two-day total of over 96,000 who witnessed the CASCAR Super Series in action.

Dilley dominates, Whitlock wins Calgary Mopar 300

Winner Race City MOPAR 500 Weekend

Sunday July 20, 2003         Dave Whitlock led the final 13 laps of the Mopar 300 to bring home the first ever win for DaimlerChrysler at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park, in the Mopar 500 Weekend that they have sponsored for many years. But for teammate Mark Dilley, who started from the pole and was clearly the fastest car on the track all day, it was total frustration.

"I’m just so proud of this Avenue Motorworks ACDelco / NMT team" said Whitlock who has now won three events here and ties the record held by second place finisher Peter Gibbons. "We had a strategy that was simply to keep fresh tires under this #39 Intrepid and be there at the end. We’ve been here enough times to know how tough this track is on tires, and that the only lap you need to lead is the last one. With each tire change, we made small adjustments to the handling and the car responded just perfectly. It sure was hot out there, but ‘Ol Spin was just awesome. Thanks to Mopar for their significant support of this Series, and the purse double-up they offered today. With the season we’ve had this year, that extra money is very welcome. We feel bad for Mark but we’ve been there too and it’s just a heartbreaker. But after winning the Kubota Pit Stop Contest on Thursday, and the race today, it’s been an awesome weekend for this Avenue team. We’ll have a great night tonight, and look forward to representing them well again next week in Vancouver."

Whitlock inherited the lead when Dilley was tagged while passing a slower car that was down five laps, sending him into a spin in turn two. His efforts to recover caused the transmission to lock up and he could no longer get up to speed. Dilley finished two laps down in 12th.

"That was the best car I have ever had – bar none" said the dejected Dilley. "This was my weekend; the pole, a fast car and a bunch of NTN folks here. I was just out there on cruise saving the #64 NTN Bearings car for a final shootout with Dave should he catch me or if another caution came out. I don’t even want to talk about the incident – that stuff just shouldn’t happen. Watch it on TV and you decide."

Although the victory was sweet for the #39 team, both teams felt deprived. It’s been four and a half years that Whitlock and Dilley have been looking for a one-two finish, and although it was clearly in the cards today, it was denied. Third place went to another Intrepid driver DJ Kennington.

Rookie Bryan Cathcart also had a miserable day. "We were looking for much more out of the #71 National Fast Freight Intrepid today" said Cathcart. "We developed some engine problems early and just had to chase the car all day. We weren’t sure what it was but we just had to stay out there and ride it out. It was a very long and frustrating day." Cathcart started 16th and finished 22nd, 9 laps down.

The teams head to Vancouver early this week for the Canadian Tire 100, as part of the Molson Indy activities there next weekend.

Whitlock Teams dominate Calgary Pit Stop contest

July 18, 2003     Bright sun and the Calgary race gods are already shining on the Whitlock teams. After the parade of CASCAR Super Series cars through the downtown streets, the teams lined up for the annual Kubota Pit Stop Competition at Eau Claire Market. Whitlock teams took three out of the top four spots.

The crowd responded with great applause as the #11 Avenue ACDelco / NMT team of driver Dave Whitlock set a new national record. The team jacked the car and replaced both right side tires in a blinding 9.45 seconds, smashing the old record of 10.09.

"They did an awesome job" said Whitlock, who won the Calgary Mopar 300 event in 2001 and 1997. "The crew practiced a lot back in the early spring. The stops in the races have been great. They never miss one when it counts and they laid another great one down today. It will likely be a long time before that record gets beat."

The #64 NTN Bearings team of driver Mark Dilley was second with a time of 13.56, while the #71 National Fast freight team of driver rookie Bryan Cathcart placed fourth.

Whitlock Teams – Mopar 500 Weekend pre-race

July 16, 2003 The CASCAR Super Series pulls out of Toronto and appears in Calgary this weekend for the Mopar 500 Weekend at Race City. The high-banked half-mile facility is a favorite of many drivers and can provide its share of damage when things go wrong.

The events encompassing their Days of Thunder activities continue downtown Thursday with the Kubota Pit Stop Competition at the Eau Claire Market from 11 am – 2 pm. A reception for the teams, volunteers and sponsors follows. At 6 pm, Race City Motorsport Park presents the Mopar Parts 500 – Rev Up Your Engines event at Shanks Athletic Club, the official press conference and meet and greet.

Friday evening features the Twin 100s qualifying races – always a show in itself. Sat night is the last-chance qualifying race and the Mopar 300 goes off Sunday at 1 pm.

Here’s what the drivers say:

Mark Dilley

13th - Avenue ACDelco 100 in the NTN Bearings #64 Intrepid

I had a real problem getting a hold of Mark but understanding the fact that he is about to be a new father that isn’t unusual.

He is going into the Calgary race with a great car and a record to beat from last year. Mark’s hope’s going into the Indy were that he would regain his top 5 position which he was able to achieve. Looking at the high-banked half mile at Calgary, his dreams can only soar from here.

Dave Whitlock

14th - Avenue ACDelco 100 in the Avenue ACDelco / NMT #11 Intrepid

This weekend: Dave will be driving the Avenue ACDelco / NMT #39 Intrepid.

"This is a favorite track of ours," states Whitlock, "We won here in 97 and again in 2001 and I expect good things from this track. The biggest challenge here is maintain the tires. This track is very hard on tires."

But looking in advance Whitlock sees himself proudly displaying the Avenue ACDelco colours on the podium. "The chance that Avenue has given us is fantastic and we really appreciate all they do for us."

Bryan Cathcart

18th - Avenue ACDelco 100 in the National Fast Freight #71 Intrepid

Running the Molson Indy was a dream for the Series' leading Rookie.

"We finished far above where we thought we would at the Indy. That track was just anther stepping stone on the learning curve for us. We have a lot of experience on the quarter mile at Peterborough, which is high banked like this. Although this is another track I haven’t seen yet, I expect that experience to help us. The tire management and pit strategies will also be new to us so it’s going to be a real work weekend."

Struggles for Whitlock teams at CASCAR Toronto Indy

"It is very difficult to be right on the mark out of the box at this event" said Whitlock. "Our first time on the track was Friday evening for a 30 minute practice. The weather changed from sun to rain all day about every hour. We started in the drizzle and then it stopped. Our qualifying was Sat at 7:15 am and a late red flag period caught many of the top runners off guard and saw them starting deep in the field. When the race went off at 5:15 pm, again the skies were threatening but then the sun came out strong." MORE

Whitlock qualified his Avenue ACDelco / NMT #11 Intrepid in 21st, and finished 14th. "The car was good, but we seemed to be just down a bit in power today" said Whitlock who was driving a specially prepared car for the event sponsor Avenue Motor Works. "The good news is that none of our cars are damaged and we’ll be able to get off to Calgary sooner this week."

Whitlock confirmed at Toronto that he will enter the same #11 Avenue ACDelco Intrepid in the Vancouver Molson Indy in two weeks. He then announced that for the Mopar 500 in Calgary this weekend, his usual #39 NMT Intrepid will be flying the Avenue colours. Avenue Motor Works is Canada’s largest ACDelco parts distributor. Their operation in Calgary is known as Avenue West, and the team looks forward to providing them with a weekend to remember. Calgary is Dave’s favorite track and he has won there before.

Al Turner

In a special two-race promotion that includes both Molson Indy events for sponsor Blue Steak, Barrie’s Al Turner returned to do battle on the streets of Toronto in Dave Whitlock’s #39 Intrepid. But misfortune bit him early.

"We were concerned about the transmission. It worked fine in the qualifying session but only lasted 11 laps in the Avenue ACDelco 100 main event" said Turner who has typically done exceptionally well on the street courses. "For my first outing this year, we felt pretty good. The qualifying got messed up but we had a respectable 16th. When the race started, I was just getting my rhythm and starting to pick them off when we had to park it. We did have two new transmissions that were slated for this event but unfortunately they didn’t arrive in time. I guess we’ll just have to make up for this in Vancouver – can we win twice in one race?" he smiled.

Dave Whitlock - Molson Indy Toronto
This
weekend: the Avenue ACDelco / NMT #11 Intrepid.

"I’m so excited about going back to Toronto to race," explained Dave Whitlock. "And to be able to display the Avenue Motor Works colours on the car is just plain neat." Dave will be piloting the number 11 Intrepid through the twists and turns along the Toronto waterfront as he and the other CASCAR Super Series drivers compete for the glory in the Avenue ACDelco 100 as part of the Toronto Molson Indy weekend.

"We are very excited to be representing Avenue Motor works. They have been an associate sponsor on Mark’s (Dilley) car for a number of years but we are proud to be able to represent them in this event," remarked Whitlock.

Traditionally road courses have not been lucky for the Dave’s team. "Although we have really decent runs small things keep happening. Mechanical problems, spins and small crashes." Then, with determination, he announced, "But we are looking forward to a solid finish and bringing the car home in one piece with this one."

The Avenue Motor Works Intrepid is being proudly displayed throughout the festivities in Toronto this week.

Avenue Motor Works to have Dave Whitlock in #11

Three-time Champion entered in Avenue ACDelco 100 at Molson Indy Toronto

July 07, 2003 The recent announcement that Al Turner would be driving the Whitlock Motorsports supplied #39 Blue Streak Intrepid at both Toronto and Vancouver Indy’s is exciting news for most. That is, except perhaps for the ‘driver’ part of Whitlock himself who had given up his seat time at these venerable street courses. But a surprise announcement today by John Bosschaert, president of Avenue Motor Works indicates an agreement has been reached for Dave Whitlock to drive the Avenue ACDelco #11 Chrysler Intrepid in the race of the same name. The CASCAR event at the Molson Indy Toronto is now officially designated the Avenue ACDelco 100 and is the feature event of Saturday.

As a part of announcing Avenue’s title sponsor role two weeks ago http://www.cascar.ca/series_news_active/2003-06-23.htm , several new pre-race activities were planned to expose the event. Included in those are several opportunities for media and fans to be tire changers on that same Avenue ACDelco #11 CASCAR Intrepid to be driven by Whitlock.

In announcing this latest news, Bosschaert was excited. "I’ve known Dave for five years through our relationship with Mark Dilley, and this extension to what we already had planned for the Indy is a perfect opportunity to expose the Avenue and ACDelco brands to the live and TV audiences that love this premier CASCAR event. We’re proud to have Dave and his top-caliber team be able to bring this together so quickly and to represent Avenue Motor Works as we present this inaugural race." The arrangement with Whitlock in the #11 car is also extended to the Vancouver Molson Indy in three weeks.

Said Whitlock "We’re real happy to be associated with John and Avenue and to be a big part of the debut of his CASCAR Super Series event. Having a car in one of these races with the event name on it is neat, and to be the driver of that car makes it real neat. I’m anxious to meet a lot of new people through all of the functions and hope we can help make some new CASCAR fans and some new Avenue customers."

The opportunity for Whitlock surfaced after it was announced last Monday (see below) that Al Turner would be returning for two races in Dave’s #39 Intrepid. "Al and I talked in the winter about doing something together sometime if it was in the cards, and since my #39 team is essentially out of the points hunt now for this season, it just fell together. It’s going to be great to have Al back at the Indy’s and just maybe he’ll take Blue Streak back to the podium - in his old car."

It is a busy week for CASCAR fans and for Mark Dilley who has worked diligently with CASCAR’s marketing man Richard Caughlin for promotion of the Avenue ACDelco 100. Here are the highlights – catch them if you can:

TUESDAY, at the TD Centre Courtyard form 10 – 2 p.m., it’s the Avenue ACDelco Media Pit Stop Challenge featuring the Avenue ACDelco #11 Intrepid. Whitlock’s car will be in the air and both left wheels will be part of the Challenge. Many festivities include car displays and meet the driver opportunities.

WEDNESDAY, Crocodile Rock at 240 Adelaide St W hosts the Molson Canadian Blow Out Bash starting at 5: 30 pm. CASCAR and Indy drivers will be bartenders, see the Molson Indy girls, maybe win a Dodge SX 2.0.

THURSDAY, at the John Street Toronto entertainment district, it’s the Molson Canadian Pit Party. The road is closed – it’s a street party with beer gardens and Miss Molson Indy contestants. On stage will be live entertainment and the Avenue ACDelco #11 all set up for hours of tire-changing fun.

And as a special treat after Friday’s on-track activities, Mark, Dave, and John and Diane Bosschaert will be limo’d off to join the driver’s VIP party hosted by Paul Tracy at Gretzky’s.

Special thanks to Whitlock sponsor NMT for coming along for the ride on both the #11 and the #39 at the Indy – we know you’ll have a blast there too.

And TONIGHT - watch the EXIDE BATTERIES 200 from MOSPORT INT'L RACEWAY
on SPORTSNET MONDAY JULY 7TH at 7:00PM!

Through an innovative agreement between Al Turner and Dave Whitlock, Al will pilot the Whitlock Motorsports #39 Chrysler Intrepid at both events. Turner will wear the Blue Streak colours and the "Blue Streak Racing" paint scheme will be revived for both races. Whitlock drives the wheel off, comes up short at Shootout

June 30, 2003 Rain played havoc during the early laps of the Dodge Canada Day Shootout presented by Mopar. But when the skies cleared nicely for the 200 lap event at Cayuga 2000 Speedway last night, it set a great stage for some real thunder as fans witnessed an outstanding late-race driving performance by three-time Champion Dave Whitlock.

By virtue of his win in the first 50-lap qualifier, Whitlock started the Shootout on the inside of the second row. Within 10 laps, the trio of Pete Gibbons, Kerry Micks and Dave Whitlock had driven away from the balance of the field. The leaders pitted for fuel and tires during a caution at lap 80, and the trio again quickly assembled ahead of the field. With 40 to go, Dave was feeling comfortable that he had more car left than the others and was patiently waiting for signs of their weaknesses. But a different strategy was immediately forced upon his NMT / H&S Heat Treating team a few laps later when Whitlock’s #39 Intrepid experienced a flat right front tire.

Returning to the track in 17th position, and reminiscent of the 2001 event here that saw him come from last to first in 30 laps, Whitlock was again a man on a mission. Passing cars on both the inside and out, he was back up to seventh when a caution came out with two to go. Although his momentum was interrupted, Whitlock’s last lap attempt to pass DJ Kennington in turn 4 for fourth was foiled when DJ drove him high, allowing two others to slip past and resulted in a seventh place finish for the Wyoming ON driver and team owner.

"That’s not what we wanted or what we should have got here tonight" said Whitlock. "This NMT / H&S Intrepid was awesome all night and I think I would have had enough car to chase down Pete, Pete or Kerry there at the end. We tested good here last week and the crew gave me the right setup tonight, but flat tires are a just tough break you can’t do anything about. That’s the frustrating part. I really wanted this one for our team, for our NMT sponsors here tonight, for the Dodge people, for Intrepid - and especially for Whitlock Motorsports and all that extra Mopar bonus money that was on the line tonight."

Off-track - Whitlock sponsor and NMT president David Orosz entertained a group of 35 staff, family and friends, most of whom had never experienced a CASCAR Super Series event. After a mid-afternoon garage tour and an excellent race, all seemed to have experienced a day of great memories and a pride in their association with the #39 Whitlock team – and CASCAR racing.

Also in the Whitlock Motorsports grandstand area were Mark Dilley’s sponsors Leland Industries and National Waste, as well as executives of Bryan Cathcart’s sponsor National Fast Freight. At the NTN Bearings campsite, several clients and sponsors enjoyed the pre-race barbecue and the hospitality of NTN’s Jim Dunlevy.

With one weekend off, the Series returns to left-and-righters for the 'Avenue ACDelco 100' Super Series race on the street course of the Toronto Molson Indy on July 11-12. Many activities take place during the week prior, and some other relative news from the Whitlock stables will be part of that – stay tuned.

Whitlock, Dilley, Cathcart, Shepherd ready for Shootout

June 26, 2003         This is IT; the weekend for the 2nd annual ‘biggie’ at the famous 5/8 mile high-banked oval of Cayuga 2000 Speedway. It’s the Dodge Canada Day Shootout presented by Mopar, and if it’s anything like the inaugural event, there’ll be lots of action and things to see. It’s two days of really good racing and a big midway. And the presence of NASCAR stars Sterling Marlin, Kenny Wallace and the Bodine brothers of Brett and Geoffrey pitted against our homegrown stars of the CASCAR Super Series create memories for a lifetime. The entire 15,000 in attendance last year will well remember those final laps as NASCAR’s Matt Kenseth showed his talents using the high groove to overtake CASCAR champion Don Thomson Jr. for the win.

Dave Whitlock well remembers also the bumping and grinding with NASCAR’s Johnny Benson as they vied for the same spot for several laps. But more significant on Whitlock’s mind this weekend will be the strategy required to put his NMT / S&H Heat Treating #39 Intrepid in Victory Lane. His last win at Cayuga was in 2001 which ended a drought dating back to 1997, was a direct result of late race spin and subsequent pit stop for new tires. The victory was immediately dedicated to his father Doug whom had just passed away. Whitlock will be in that same car called ‘Ol Spin - named that day after Doug’s hunting Jeep that bears that name on the license plates.

Sunday will also be a special day for Whitlock sponsor Nitrex Metal Technologies, as thirty five guests will fill the top rows of the Whitlock Motorsports grandstand area. NMT President David Orosz says "This is a really big thing for us. Our people are so excited to be part of something that last year at this time we would have never even discussed. Meeting Dave Whitlock and the group of people he has assembled, and being involved with CASCAR racing is great for NMT and our sister company H & S Heat Treating. We’ll be there to cheer on Dave as well as all those Whitlock Mopars this weekend, and experience all that excitement."

All drivers from the Whitlock stables attended a very successful test day at Cayuga last week.

Mark Dilley in the NTN Bearings #64 Intrepid has been fast the last two races this season, and is looking for lady luck to shine on their performance this weekend. "The test day went well and we’re happy with the car. We’re still looking for that first win here at Cayuga, and the way Giulio has brought this crew together and the way that these Whitlock Intrepids are being prepared for us certainly provide us the best opportunity yet" said Dilley. "Can’t wait to spar with Marlin and Wallace, and can’t wait to get that NTN car to the front." NTN Motorsports Manager Jim Dunlevy has a full weekend beginning with a luncheon barbecue at the local NTN dealer in Caledonia on Friday featruing Dilley and his NTN Bearings #64 Intrepid. Dunlevy will host many dealers and customers over the weekend, providing the special NTN flavour of fun that has become their hallmark.

Bryan Cathcart makes his first appearance at Cayuga in his National Fast Freight #71 Intrepid. The Rookie of the Year contender tested well, but the seasoned late model champion was concerned that something wasn’t perfect. But a few laps in the #71 by Whitlock confirmed that a few additional tweaks would be made this week. Also in the Whitlock Motorsports grandstand area will be Bill Yarn, Ray Ash and guests of National Fast Freight. Ever a man of excitement, Ash says "We’re just so pleased to have National Fast Freight as part of this rookie season with Bryan and can’t wait to see him take on that big oval at Cayuga. Should be a great weekend."

Petey Shepherd III is a new young gun making his CASCAR Super Series debut this weekend. The 16 yr. old Grade 11 student and 2002 Alstar Series Rookie Champion from Brampton will be in the Whitlock Intrepid #98 with sponsorship from the auto parts warehousing firm National Exhaust, Inside Track – the Official Publication of Canadian Motorsport, and County Interiors who specialize in commercial renovations. Petey also joined the test day and felt real comfortable, running times within a couple tenths of a second of Whitlock and Dilley. An added bit of excitement for the Shepherd family this weekend will be having their friend Murray Tim changing tires for Petey. Tim, of Kitchener ON will be home for the weekend but must return Monday to Charlotte where he is the front tire changer on the Winston Cup team of former NASCAR Champion Terry Labonte. A big and special thanks go to Tom Baker of National Exhaust, Don Connors of County Interiors and all the great people at Inside Track for helping the Shepherds put this weekend together for Petey.

LAST MINUTE TICKETS…. Still available in the Whitlock Grandstand - $50 each. Save $5 and get a Mopar gift and cheer on those Intrepids. Call Don Brooks at 519-243-2031 before 9 pm Thursday with your credit card number – pick your tickets up at the track.

Mosport Road Course Whitlock breaks, loses 34 laps

Dave Whitlock wasn’t even shifting when the transmission failed on lap 2 of the Exide Batteries 200km at Mosport this weekend. After coasting to a stop just past Moss’ corners, he sat on the wall with the corner man, watched the race and waited. During the only caution of the race, he was then towed to the garage area and the crew quickly replaced the transmission. Completing only 17 laps in total relegated a 24th place finish for the Fast Eddie Racewear / Aeroquip Express / NMT #39 Intrepid.

"That sure wasn’t the day we’d hoped for" said the three-time Champion from Wyoming ON. "We’d learned a lot in the final practice session and were pretty confident that Mark and I could both be top 5 contenders today. It’s so frustrating to have a part break like that, and then to sit there helplessly watching the laps go by. And when we did get back out for those final 15 laps, the car was really good and I could run right with Mark at the end. Lady luck just wasn’t with us I guess."

Shepherd qualifies

Sixteen-year old Petey Shepherd III has tons of laps in go karts and late models, but this day was for getting a few laps on the famed Mosport road course in a CASCAR Super Series car. And by qualifying for the Exide Batteries 200 km, the young gun from Brampton is now eligible to qualify for the Canada Day Shootout at Cayuga. Since his #98 Intrepid is the same car he will use at Cayuga and was not prepared for the road course, Shepherd completed only 3 laps citing ‘mission accomplished’.

Shootout next

With this coming weekend off, the CASCAR Super Series teams are now focused on the second annual Dodge Canada Day Shootout presented by Mopar, at Cayuga 2000 Speedway on Sunday, June 29th. The one-day special adds some professional NASCAR drivers to the mix for two 50 lap qualifiers at 2 pm and the 200 lap feature at 7 pm. A large hospitality and interactive area are also features of this event that last year attracted the largest Canadian oval track crowd in history.

Shootout tickets

We have blocked off one of the best sections in the grandstand for our sponsors, friends and fans to be together. The top rows are gone, but there are still at least 40 choice seats available. Get your group together quickly and call me with your plastic number to get in on this deal.

Four Whitlock drivers on Mosport road course this weekend

June 14, 2003     With three 'non-oval' events on the 2003 schedule, fully one-quarter of the races will be contested on road courses, of one type or another. The CASCAR Super Series will make its first road racing appearance of the season, this weekend, when Mosport Int'l Raceway hosts the 'Exide Batteries 200 km' on the legendary 2.459 mile, 10-turn road course.

Dave Whitlock has visited victory circle here before and looks forward to a good run in the #39 NMT / Artcal Graphics Intrepid. Feature sponsors for this weekend are Fast Eddie Racewear and Aeroquip Express Hose Centers.

Mark Dilley and his NTN Bearings #64 team are no strangers here either. "We’re really looking forward to the benefits of this new Mopar horsepower on that big long Mosport straight; ‘gonna be awesome"

For rookie Bryan Cathcart, it will be the beginning of his aspirations to challenge the road course format, and looks forward to a steep learning curve in his National Fast Freight #71 Intrepid.

Sixteen year-old Petey Shepherd joins Whitlock Motorsports for his CASCAR Super Series debut. With his eyes set on qualifying here to ensure his starting spot in the Canada Day Shootout, this grade eleven student already has a deep racing heritage. Winning the Canadian Karting Championship at age eleven, winning 12 features in a Thunder car at age 13 and three Rookie titles since then, he is currently in his second year competing in the Alstar Late Model series and looking for his first wins this year. His father Pete Shepherd and Uncle Bill Zardo are both familiar names in Ontario racing circles.

Car owner Dave Whitlock is very impressed. "Petey certainly has a lot of laps under his belt already and is a very level-headed young gun. We really look forward to working with his family and to providing Petey with a very competitive ride in our #98 Intrepid – it’s a great car number that rode with me for our last Championship and we’re excited to bring it back again with Petey."

OFF-TRACK: Dave Whitlock and his #39 Fast Eddie Clothing Co / NMT Intrepid appeared at press conferences this past week in both Peterborough and Ottawa in support of the Rest Up! Save Your Neck awareness campaign being launched by the Insurance Bureau of Canada to reduce the number of soft tissue and whiplash related injuries in vehicle accidents.

Last week, Whitlock appeared at media presentations in London and Barrie.

Whitlock happy with Peterborough finish

June 8, 2003 Under sunny afternoon skies for practice and qualifying, and a clear evening for racing, the packed house at Peterborough Speedway witnessed an excellent Dodge Dealers of Ontario 200. Whitlock qualified his Nitrex Metal Technologies / Artcal Graphics Intrepid sixth fastest and finished fifth.

The final 101 laps were run without being interrupted by a caution flag, which is uncharacteristic for Super Series races here. The facility is known as one of the toughest tracks on the circuit. Pole sitter Kerry Micks led the final 38 laps, followed by Don Thomsom Jr. in second, a career best of third for Brad Graham and DJ Kennington in fourth. Just six of the 26 starters finished on the lead lap.

"Anytime you end up with a top five, it’s a good night" said Whitlock. "And to come away from Peterborough with just a few tire marks and no damage is a real bonus. We were strong during the first two thirds staying with the leaders and biding our time. But car started going away during the last long green session and I just hung on as best we could."

Whitlock’s #39 Intrepid displayed Kawartha Speedway on the hood and sides as the featured sponsor for this event. "Skip wants the fans to know that his track is still there and that he still supports CASCAR racing. And we’re all hoping things can be worked out for the fall event that is scheduled to be that popular facility" said Whitlock. This event was moved to Peterborough Speedway in response to news that Kawartha Speedway will not be holding stock car racing events at their facility at the current time.

The Series moves to its first road course of the season this weekend for a two-day event on Mosport's famous 4 KM circuit, along with a host of other added features. The Exide Batteries 200km goes off Sunday at 2 pm.

Dave Whitlock likes the odds;
CASCAR returns to Peterborough

June 5, 2003 Fresh off his Mopar 300 win at Delaware Speedway on Victoria Day weekend, the schedule change has Dave Whitlock very optimistic. That change has moved the second event of the 2003 CASCAR Super Series from Kawartha Speedway to Peterborough Speedway, and it goes off this Saturday in a one-day format – the Dodge Dealers of Ontario 200. The announcement comes in response to news that Kawartha Speedway will not be holding stock car racing events at their facility at the current time.

"I really like Peterborough" said Whitlock. "It’s a fast 1/3 mile that has a real narrow racing groove, and there’ll be fighting for position the whole night long. It’s the kind of track that can beat you up ‘cause you can get frustrated so easily. Somebody bumps you, or somebody makes a bad move and lots of cars can be beat up in a heartbeat. But we’ve won there twice before. Once in 1991 and again in 1997, and since those were six years apart, this Mopar power in ‘Ol Spin could just bring up our number again in 2003 – and the NMT / Artcal Graphics Intrepid could be in the Winners Circle."

Whitlock Opens the new Aeroquip Express Hose Center

May 22 03  Dave Whitlock appeared in Brampton for the opening of the newest Aeroquip Express Hose Center location.  A sincere welcome to the city, the presentation of a plaque and the ribbon cutting ceremony was officiated by the Mayor and the President of the Board of Trade.

Paul, an employee of the new store kept hammering away on the Tire Change game and was declared the winner with a best time of 8.13 secs.  He did not get to keep the Mopar 300 trophy, but he tried.

Thanks to the folks at parent company Omniflex, and to the US Aeroquip personnel for their fine hospitality.

Wins CASCAR season opener

May 18, 2003 Dave Whitlock ended years of frustration today by claiming his first ever Super Series race at his home track of Delaware Speedway, outside London, ON. With a display of patience and tenacity that showcased the veteran talent he has become, Whitlock capitalized on excellent pit work by his crew and simply wore down the competition in one of the most exciting season openers in recent memory.

Not happy with his 11th place qualifying run on Saturday, the crew made several changes to the chassis setup overnight. And apparently, they were correct.

Whitlock takes a Polish Victory Lap“This APC Auto Parts Centres / Artcal Graphics / Nitrex Metal Technologies Chrysler Intrepid was just awesome all day today” said Whitlock. “The new Mopar power was so smooth; it was strong off the corners and kept pulling all the way down the straights. Ol’ Spin was a pleasure to drive, one of the best cars I’ve ever had here at Delaware. And how ‘bout that crew today – they did an awesome job on every pit stop.”

Whitlock sets up all three team cars himself before they arrive at the track, but from there, it’s up to the individual crew chief and drivers. Prior to each of the three pit stops during the Mopar 300, Whitlock’s crew chief Warren Jones reviewed their plans for tire and chassis changes with Dave over the radio, and each time Dave left the decisions up to them. And each time, their strategy and execution were superb.

But a cloud hangs over the victory as CASCAR officials have requested the carburetor be sent to the manufacturer for clarification. View those comments as published by Jim Cressman at http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/LondonFreePress/Sports/2003/05/19/90598.html

Teammate Mark Dilley qualified his new #64 NTN Bearings Intrepid in 12th. The Barrie ON resident and former champion appeared headed for a top five finish, but a late-race stop-and-go penalty was assessed for a tire-change infraction. Dilley was unable to re-gain that lost lap and finished 8th.

The newest Whitlock teammate and Rookie contender Bryan Cathcart turned in a respectable 18th place finish. Cathcart was comfortable all day in his National Fast Freight #71 Intrepid, but his first run at the Delaware 1/2 mile ended at lap 246 when a bump from behind caused a spin into the back straight wall. “We learned a lot here today, but it’s just not the finish I was hoping for” said the dejected Cathcart who hails from Peterborough ON.

A schedule change sees the next CASCAR Super series event at Peterborough Speedway for a one-day event on June 7th. A press conference is scheduled on Tuesday May 20th. For more info and a complete summary of results for the Mopar 300, see www.cascar.ca

Off-track News

Thursday May 22, Dave Whitlock will make an appearance in Brampton ON to celebrate the opening of Canada’s first Aeroquip EXPRESS Hose Center location. Activities include an appearance by the Mayor and her attempt to set fastest time on the Tire Change Challenge game. Whitlock’s Aeroquip Express / Fast Eddie Clothing Co / NMT #39 Intrepid will also be on site. For more info, contact Peter Coulan at 519-622-0261.

Ol Spin has new twist for Dave Whitlock

May 15, 2003                As the CASCAR Super Series takes to Delaware Speedway this weekend for the season opening MOPAR 300, the ‘Ol Spin name on the dashboard of his race car will be one of the only familiar sights for Dave Whitlock. With the loss of Ford sponsorship last fall, Whitlock has revamped his complete stable of cars to Chrysler and will be debuting his new #39 Intrepid.  This car was named after his late father’s hunting Jeep and has logged four wins in the last two seasons.

Although no primary sponsorship has yet replaced Ford, the situation has created many new opportunities this year, the switch to Chrysler being one of them.

“When we digested the additional winnings presented by DaimlerChrysler’s contingency program, it really got our attention” said Whitlock of Wyoming ON.  “With the opportunity to purchase some top-notch cars and motors, plus the confirmed return of Mark Dilley and his NTN team, plus the opportunity to field a third team for rookie Bryan Cathcart – it all came together.  That all started only 15 weeks ago but we now have seven Intrepids, and have been fortunate to sell all the Ford equipment.”

Whitlock has a new Primary Associate relationship with Nitrex Metal Technologies Inc. of Burlington, ON who provide premium surface engineering treatments to the metal industry. . “We are so pleased to be involved with Dave this year” says NMT President David Orosz. “Our people are looking forward to being at the tracks and cheering on all the Whitlock team cars. I’m a Dodge guy at heart and this is really going to be fun.”

For the first time in eleven years, Whitlock had the opportunity to incorporate his own design of the cars,

For the MOPAR 300, ‘Ol Spin will have a very unique look.  APC Auto Parts Centres will provide major sponsorship.  “We are proud to assist Dave Whitlock for this event, and to have him represent our APC brand in the Super Series” said president Ivor Jones, who’s CANUSA Automotive Warehousing sponsorship supports three teams in weekly racing at Delaware this season, and recently brought racing legend Mario Andretti to the track for a special appearance.

Special thanks also go to Wilf Myers at Artcal Graphics.  Their presentation on the hood of ‘Ol Spin may very well be the most photographed subject this weekend.

Returning as associate sponsors with Whitlock Motorsports are CRS Choice Reefer Systems – supplier of the beautiful Kenworth that pulls the team transporter, BOC Gases, Hawk Performance braking components, Lincoln Electric, Lugfasts, MY Classic Auto Body, NTN Bearings, and OMP – the finest driving suits.

Although Whitlock is the Series’ only three-time National Champion, a major victory at his home track of Delaware is still elusive.  To that, he said  “We’ve won several poles and have been leading several of them close to the end, but that checkered flag has always got away from us.  Our focus this weekend will be to change that once and for all, and to have ‘Ol Spin bring home that trophy for us, for our new sponsors and for MOPAR.”

Weekend activities start Friday night with the Twin 100 qualifying events to determine final starting positions for Sunday’s 300 lapper. For more information, see www.delawarespeedway.com and www.cascar.ca

WHITLOCK MOTORSPORTS TO MOPAR; THREE DRIVERS IN 2003 CASCAR SERIES

March 13 2003

WYOMING, ON - Dave Whitlock is definitely back in CASCAR. And to prove it, his Wyoming-based Whitlock Motorsports stable has made dramatic changes in the last five weeks, which includes switching from Ford to Chrysler, and adding a driver. Bryan Cathcart of Peterborough will be a rookie contender and joins team drivers Mark Dilley and Dave Whitlock in support of a first Manufacturer’s Cup for DaimlerChrysler Canada Inc.

"It seems like a blur" said Whitlock, referring to all that has happened since the January 31st announcement of the ISA demise. "But we’re happy and excited with what we’ve accomplished so far. CASCAR is our focus and improving each driver’s performance is our mission."

"The switch to Mopar was a big decision, considering the amount of Ford inventory we have" said Whitlock. "But Mopar is an outstanding Series supporter and we wanted to support them too, if possible. I have to thank Al Turner for not only providing us the opportunity to purchase his four cars and motors, but for having such great quality stuff that I am proud to be the new owner; everything is just impeccable and is a tribute to the entire Turner Motorsports organization. I know that the decision faced by Al and Jill was not an easy one, yet it was made for all the right reasons at this time. I wish them well and fully expect to see Al back on the track sometime."

" We are extremely excited about Whitlock Motorsports joining Team Mopar" stated Roy Westlake of DaimlerChrysler Canada Inc. "Mopar has always had a high level of respect for this top calibre team. Dave Whitlock and Mark Dilley are past CASCAR Champions, both teams have talented crews and dedicated sponsors. We are looking forward to working closely with them and rookie Bryan Cathcart in the upcoming season and are proud that they will be carrying Mopar power under the hood and a Mopar decal on their race cars!"

Bryan Cathcart has a stellar background in late model racing, being both the Rookie and Track Champion at Peterborough Speedway in 1982. He went on to win the Championship again in ‘85, ‘87 and ’97 and has also ventured into events at Lancaster and Oxford Plains. During the last five years, racing has taken a back seat to family and business priorities, but Bryan did drive a Peter Gibbons car in two CASCAR Super Series events last season.

"I was very impressed not only with the cars but the calibre of competition and the cooperation and consideration of everyone, from drivers to officials. I’ve always wanted to be part of a travelling series. I’ve always been impressed with the quality of car that Dave provides Mark week in and week out and I’ve noticed the fun their group seems to have at the track. Then, after getting to know Dave and seeing his outstanding facility and organization, it became a reality. They will provide me a race-ready Intrepid for the complete season and my trucks will make sure it gets there. I’m excited; I’m anxious to get to know everyone and it feels like a great fit for both myself and Whitlock Motorsports."

Said Richard Coughlin, CASCAR, Director of Sales & Marketing, "We are delighted to have Bryan Cathcart run for Rookie of the Year honours in the Super Series this season. Bryan has a long racing history, and we are very pleased that he has decided to step up and compete at the top level of Canadian stock car racing in 2003. With the support of Whitlock Motorsports, we know Bryan will make an impact on the series in his first full season with us." The 2003 CASCAR Super Series season begins at Delaware Speedway on Victoria Day weekend, May 16-18. More details can be seen at www.delawarespeedway.com or www.cascar.ca

To all Friends of Whitlock Motorsports:

February 28, 2003 - Dave would like to express his gratitude for your support during the 2002 CASCAR season. We are extremely proud of the relationships that have developed with many of you whether sponsors, crew, volunteers, or other teams.

Much has happened since the close of last season so allow me this opportunity to recap for you. We have released nothing except for three articles that can be accessed in our archives section.

The first is a release of October 26 02 announced Dave Whitlock as supporting the new ISA Exide Series. Dave made the decision admittedly with periodic skepticism, but in clear conscious that it was in the best future interest of his company and family.

The second release of November 04 02 identifies our loss of major sponsorship from Ford of Canada and the reasons were clearly stated as nothing to do with the announced new ISA Series.

We’ll wrap up the 4-month ISA saga in a few sentences for you. Dave and five other drivers assembled to form the Technical Advisory Committee. The TAC spent hundreds of hours in meetings and phone calls to put together the technical issues of both the new ISA spec car and the rules required meeting the transition issues of the first year.

However, the bottom line is that it didn’t fly. Simply, the overall plans were too aggressive for the resources and time available. Many false promises created a mysterious web of confidence and commitments were being made from all sides.

When the new General Manager took the reigns in mid- January, and by the time enough skeletons in the closet were identified, the unfulfilled cash inflows from sponsors and ticket sales became such a burden that there was no money to meet their obligations of Feb 1st. Dave was among the first to be advised. The stories will likely
