Good runs
by Dilley and Whitlock at CASCAR Mosport road course
OSHAWA, ON – June 20 04: It was a beautiful sunny Father’s Day throughout
the hills of the gorgeous and fabled road course that is Mosport
International Raceway. CASCAR star Mark Dilley had a great day with a top
five finish while team mate Dave Whitlock finished 7th during
the Clarington 200 at the 2.459-mile, 10-turn facility.
During the two timed qualifying sessions on Saturday,
it was Whitlock that actually clocked the faster of the two Dodge drivers.
At the end of the day, it was Whitlock 5th in his Avenue , NMT
#39 Dodge while Dilley placed his NTN Bearings #64 in the 7th
starting spot, immediately behind Whitlock.
"The pre-race autograph session was busy with many
spectators taking the opportunity to chat with drivers before heading off
to their favorite Mosport vantage point. "This certainly seemed like one
of the better crowds we’ve had here in a while" said Whitlock. "We just
love coming here. It’s a wonderful facility that has so much history; so
many of the world’s great race drivers have been here at some time or
other."
Number 1 qualifier Don Thomson Jr. forfeited his lead on
lap 18 of the 51 lap event to Jeff Lapcevich in the #23 Tim Horton
Chevrolet. After winning both Molson Indy street races in 2003, Lapcevich
appears to be capable of ‘owning’ all non-oval events, as he used unique pit
strategy to cruise to a 21 second lead over Thomson, while Peter Gibbons
rounded out the top three.
"That was one of the better days I’ve had here" said
Dilley. "We had an awesome pit stop and picked up three positions. It was
that NTN team that got us into the top five today; what a great effort, a
great race and a great facility."
Whitlock agreed. "It was good to come here and have no
problems today. We made several changes to our road course cars this year
and I’m pretty sure we’ll be able to build on this when we get to Toronto
and Vancouver for the Indies. I’m happy with that top ten for sure – we’re
still in a solid second in points as we head back to Cayuga for the Canada
Day Shootout on July 4th.
