Whitlock Dodges shine at Molson Indy

TORONTO, ON – July 11 04: A beautiful hot weekend by the shores of Lake Ontario once again provided a perfect setting for the sixth annual outing for CASCAR teams on the streets of Toronto. The Molson Indy always creates a big splash in TO for sponsors, fans and drivers; and one thing that every CASCAR competitor knew was that barring a misfortune - Jeff Lapcevich would win his second straight Toronto event - and fourth consecutive road course. And he did, as his #23 Tim Hortons Chevy led all of the 36-laps around the 11-turn temporary street circuit.

After final qualifying Saturday morning, Mark Dilley lined up his NTN Bearings #64 Dodge for the hot afternoon main event in 8th , followed by team mate Dave Whitlock’s #39 Avenue, NMT #39 Dodge in 9th .

At the drop of the green flag, all twenty-nine racers made it through the precarious and feared very tight right-hander of turn 1 without incident, and continued throughout the 36 laps completely caution free. Both Whitlock Motorsports' drivers were able to advance their starting positions. Mark gained three spots to finish 5th while Dave, although running 7th for awhile, brought his Dodge home in 8th.

Current Series point leader Pete Gibbons was forced to pit with his transmission locked in 2nd gear but quick pit efforts got him back out on the same lap. His 10th place finish narrowed that lead, and Don Thomson Jr’s fine 2nd place finish allowed him a slight gain over Dave Whitlock, who now sits 3 points back in third – but only 23 points behind Gibbons.

"I'm real pleased with our road course program this year" said team owner Dave Whitlock. "We've had zero problems so far, and with one to go on our western swing, we'll be going over everything very closely. I did have a lot of smoke caused by a small oil leak from a valve cover that filled the car and became a distraction.  But this was a good day; we both finished well and that keeps the momentum rolling for both Mark and I as we head into the second half of the season."

With this weekend off, the teams will again appear on the street course in Vancouver the following week and in Calgary the week after that.

On TV - Watch as Dave Whitlock wins the ATTO Canada Day Shootout at Cayuga Speedway on SPORTSNET starting Tuesday, July 13.
