Hot & Hotter for Whitlock
at inaugural Sun Valley BC
“I
don’t think I’ve ever been so hot”
Vernon BC – Jul 30 2005: The
CASCAR teams headed west from Calgary last week to the first-time
destination of Sun Valley Speedway located just over the Rockies in
beautiful British Columbia. The 39 and 9 teams of Whitlock Motorsports
were treated to two days in gorgeous Salmon Arm for a little fishing &
feasting; a heartfelt thanks from everyone there to hosts John and
Diane Bosschaert of Avenue for sharing their space.
The #39 Avenue Motor Works / NMT
Dodge Charger team replaced the damaged Calgary engine but their sights
of claiming a second-in-a row pole were dashed at the end of the
qualifying session by first JR Fitzpatrick, then DJ Kennington.
Starting then second in the 1oo lap
sprint qualifier, Dave Whitlock ran second to DJ for most of the race
but the car got loose and he faded to 4th at the end. Both
100 lappers were caution-free.
Whitlock started from the 7th
spot for the Saturday night Sun Valley 300 and ran in the top five for
most of the race, finishing 6th – a feat of shear
determination considering that Dave was in the most extreme cockpit heat
he has ever experienced. “I don’t think I’ve ever been so hot” he
said. “For some reason, the in-car temperature was almost unbearable –
like a sauna. I couldn’t breathe.” He had to be helped out after the
race. During each stop, the team had to focus on the car and the driver
needs; they added vents and ducts.

During a long green-flag period
around lap 230, Don Thompson Jr. was running hard and managed to put
several drivers down a lap. But DJ Kennington prevented Brad Graham’s
first victory and earned his western sweep after winning Calgary last
weekend.
Now back home in Ontario, the teams
must recover quickly to make the next show this Saturday Aug 6th
at Mosport Speedway.
