Disappointment for
Whitlock at Toronto Molson Indy
Toronto, ON – Jul 10 2005: The
CASCAR Super Series made its seventh consecutive appearance as part of
the 20th Molson Indy Toronto race weekend, and for the first
time ever, was part of the Sunday feature program at the temporary
Exhibition Place street circuit. For Dave Whitlock, the debut of his new
road course Dodge Charger at Mosport three weeks ago showed great
promise, and his sixth-place qualifying effort on Saturday created high
hopes for a decent finish today in the Atto 100. But problems
downshifting for turn 1 caused him to spin at the end of the long front
straight. He had to wait for almost the whole field to get by before
turning around, and finished a disappointing 18th.
“We put a lot of effort into this
brand new Avenue/ NMT Dodge Charger and I was real pleased with our
qualifying effort. And the first few laps were great. I was happy to
move up a couple of spots and to see Mark coming up behind me from his
12th place start was really good” said 3-time Champion Dave
Whitlock. “But suddenly I had problems and could not correct them with
in-car adjustments. I just couldn’t drive as far into the corners as
others. There were no more cautions after that and there was no way for
me to improve my track position. That finishing position sure knocks us
back a bit in points but we’re not out of the hunt yet”.
The race was won by Kerry Micks in
his Power Water Ford, followed by Peter Gibbons and Don Thomson Jr. in
Chevrolets. Team mate Mark Dilley had an outstanding day finishing 4th
in his Whitlock Motorsports prepared Dodge Power Water Charger,
maintaining his 2nd place in National points.
