WHITLOCK
TEAMMATES BATTLE FOR POSITION IN MONTREAL
Sunday August 27, 2006, Montreal,
PQ: Whitlock Motorsports teammates Mark Dilley and
Dave Whitlock staged a fierce battle over the final
laps of CASCAR’s inaugural visit to Montreal and the
Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Whitlock and Dilley
traded paint and positions during the closing stages
of the event, with Whitlock finally taking the sixth
spot and Dilley crossing the line in seventh. “That
was just plain fun,” stated a grinning Whitlock
after the race. “Mark and I have raced like that
before on the ovals but this was the first time we
we’ve done that on a road course.”
The #39 NTN-Bower/Griddly Headz/Nitrex
Metal Technologies Dodge Charger just kept getting
better every time out on the track. When final
qualifying was complete on Saturday morning,
Whitlock had posted the eighth quickest time lining
him up on the grid on the outside of the fourth row
for the twenty three lap main event. “This track is
really fast, faster than anywhere else we have ever
run,” stated Whitlock. “But the car was just plain
good once we got the right gear in it after the
first practice session."
Saturday's main event saw the
front row starters #02 Kerry Micks & #88 Robin Buck
check out on the rest of the field, setting a torrid
pace which they would maintain for the entire twenty
three laps in the caution free event. Whitlock
quickly moved into seventh but on the sixth circuit
of the track a little misfortune saw him loop the
car. He quickly got back on track and fell into the
twelfth position. The 39 Dodge Charger driver then
set his sights to moving back to the front again. "I
knew we could get some of those positions back,"
stated Whitlock. "We maybe could have finished top
five if I hadn't of spun but overall a sixth is a
decent finish."
Kerry Micks started from the
pole and took the win, followed closely by the #88
of Robin Buck after they traded positions several
times during the event including a last lap duel
that would see Micks take the win by less that two
tenths of a second. The final podium position went
to the #22 of Scott Steckly.
The National point standings have
tightened up with three full point race events
remaining as front runners J.R. Fitzpatrick and Don
Thomson Jr. both experienced difficulties. #84 J.
R. Fitzpatrick now has a slim eleven point lead over
second place #02 Kerry Micks. Thomson Jr. falls to
third followed by #22 Steckly who is six points
ahead of #39 Dave Whitlock who rounds out the top
five.
Whitlock Motorsports now prepare
for the Griddly Headz 200 from Cayuga Speedway on
Labour Day weekend. This will be the last race on
the existing 5/8 mile track that has been an icon in
Canadian racing for over forty years. Following
completion of the CASCAR event, construction will
start on a new state of the art racing facility on
the 300 acre parcel of land with re-opening expected
in 2008. For more information on tickets, camping
